How Much Does Reel Editing Cost? What Changes the Price

By What The Cuts · · 4 min read

Quick answer

Reel editing prices depend on length, how much work each reel needs, how many reels you want each month, how fast you need them and how many changes you ask for. A simple cut with captions costs less than a reel with motion graphics and sound design. Ask for a written scope before you compare quotes.

Why there is no single price

Ask five editors what a reel costs and you will hear five answers, because they are pricing five different jobs. One means cutting a talking clip and adding captions. Another means motion graphics, sound design and a custom opening. Both are called a reel.

Rates also vary by country and by experience, and published ranges are wide. We do not quote a figure here, because a number without a scope would mislead you.

Five things that change the price

  1. Length. A longer reel has more to cut, caption and check.
  2. Depth of edit. Cut and captions is the light end. Motion graphics, sound design, colour work and AI-generated scenes sit at the heavy end.
  3. Volume. One reel is a one-off job. A monthly package spreads set-up work across many reels.
  4. Speed. A same-day turnaround costs more than a few days' notice.
  5. Footage and revisions. Hours of unsorted raw clips take longer than ten prepared ones, and every extra round of changes adds time.

The three ways editors charge

  • Per reel. Easy to compare, but check what is included.
  • Hourly. Fair for odd jobs, harder to budget for a month of content.
  • Monthly package. A set number of reels for a set fee. Best when you post on a rhythm and want a steady style.

If you post every week, a monthly package is usually the easiest to plan around. If you post rarely, per reel is simpler.

What a package should list in writing

  • How many reels, and the maximum length of each.
  • How many rounds of changes are included.
  • Whether captions, covers and music are included, and where the music is licensed from.
  • The turnaround time for each reel.
  • The format you receive, and who owns the final files.
  • What you need to send: raw clips, a brief, brand colours and fonts.

Red flags in a quote

  • No scope, just a price.
  • No sample of work in a style close to yours.
  • Unlimited revisions at a very low price. Someone will pay for those hours, usually through a rushed edit.
  • Popular music with no word on licensing.
  • No clear owner for your files.

How to compare quotes fairly

Send the same short brief and the same sample footage to every editor you are considering. Ask each to list what is included, then compare like with like. A quote that costs less and leaves out captions, covers and a second round of changes is not cheaper.

You can also lower the cost without lowering the quality. Send organised clips, one person who signs off, and a clear note on the goal of the reel.

How we work

We start from your own footage and agree the scope before we start. Light edits for clinics and snack brands sit at one end, and AI video ads built from product photos sit at the other. See also our guides for clinics and food and D2C brands. Send us your footage and how many reels you need, and we will tell you what it would take.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a video editor charge per reel?

It depends on length, how much work each reel needs, volume, speed and revisions. A simple cut with captions costs less than a reel with motion graphics and sound design. Compare written scopes, not headline prices.

Is a monthly package cheaper than paying per reel?

Often it is cheaper per reel, because the work is predictable and the editor learns your style. Check how many reels, revisions and formats the package includes.

How many revision rounds are normal?

Many editors include one or two rounds. Agree the number before work starts, and ask what an extra round costs.

Do I have to supply the footage?

By default, yes. We work from your own footage, photos or an idea. Live shoots and videography are available on request in South India.

Does AI make reel editing cheaper?

AI can speed up some steps, such as captions or a rough first cut, but a person still has to choose the moments and the pace. Treat it as a faster tool, not a replacement for judgement.
